It's over, the dream has died. Arbroath's run in the Scottish Cup is over thanks to a 1-0 defeat at Gayfield Park.
Arbroath didn't just bend over and take it, they put up a very stiff defense and even had a goal disallowed. It was always going to be an uphill struggle for Arbroath playing against the league champions. Celtic opened them up in the 18th minute thanks to an Adam Matthews effort in the 18th minute.
Other teams would have crumbled after going down a goal but the Smokies remained tight at the back and Celtic struggled to find any real penetration. Arbroath's players playing for the pride of the shirt, lifted the home crowd and thought they had scored. Foster failed to get to the ball and Doris managed to reach around and the hump the ball into the net. Unfortunately as players raised fists in the air to celebrate, the referee disallowed the goal for an infringement. When the game finally came to an end, you could see the relief all over the Celtic players faces.
A bummer really, it would have been nice to see a penalty shoot out and perhaps provide Arbroath with a back passage into the next round to play against Raith Rovers. Oh well I'm off to pack away all this fudge I bought for Christmas, really don't know what I'm going to do with it all.
